ARTISAN NAME: Sabrina Nelson

CREATIONS: Historically Inspired Reticules (Regency to Victorian Purses), Totes, Hats and other accessories, Jewelry

ARTISAN STATEMENT: Most of what I’ll be selling at the FabMo Artisans Market are “reticules.” These are small to medium sized purses in styles reminiscent of those found from the Regency through the Edwardian period. I’m inspired by the many historical events I attend in the Bay Area such as those run by PEERS (Period Entertainment and Educational Society), The Dickens Fair, and my guild, the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild. My process involves reviewing fashion plates from various historical periods, and then seeing what I can find in fabrics. So much of the fabric from FabMo easily lends itself to these designs. I hope to also include hair fascinators, made from feathers and FabMo finds like beads, lace, tiny tiles, and even wallpaper, and perhaps a hat or two.

I’m a FabMo shopper and I’ve found that the fabric available is always the right size for bags, hats, and other accessories. I love that I’m rescuing fabric from landfills and turning it into useful and pretty things. The biggest FabMo surprise was finding a nearly 3 yard piece of emerald green velvet with a gold twirl overlay. I immediately turned it into a Princess Fiona costume to wear to a fairy tale dance. I create costumes and cosplay gear for all bodies, genders, and ages. Much of my work is historically inspired or my own interpretations of Marvel, Disney, and sci-fi characters. I enjoy working one-on-one with clients and helping them bring their ideas to life.
